Boardmasters 2011!
We came across these fab photos from the Boardmasters festival in Cornwall. With some great weather for the event, surfers and skaters flocked to the lovely coastline to enjoy a weekend of top music, lovely UK sunshine and some quality surfing competitions. The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang 2011…
About the Rip Curl Cup: Now in its eighth year, the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is Indonesia’s longest-running surfing competition and the only ISC tour event featuring top international surfers alongside Indonesia’s best.
The inaugural Rip Curl Cup was held in 2004 and won by local surfer Made “Bol” Adi Putra, who defended his title in 2005. In 2007 international surfers were invited to compete as well. World-class tube riders such as Koby Abberton (Australia), Nathan Fletcher (California) and John Florence (Hawaii) all jumped at the opportunity to compete in the prestigious event and surf Padang with just one other surfer out. The following year, the Rip Curl Cup was held as the trials for the 2008 Rip Curl Search World Championship Tour event. Kuta’s I Komang “GoGo” Sujaya took the Cup and earned a spot in the main draw of the WCT event at Uluwatu. In 2009, the last time the contest was held, Hawaiian Jamie O’Brien put on a dominating performance, scoring four perfect 10s on his way to claiming the Cup.
For 2011, Rip Curl continues to infuse the contest with international flavor and big names. The field of 32 surfers is split equally between 16 of Indonesia’s all-time greatest and 16 of the world’s best tube slayers. This invitational format, along with the allure of the wave at Padang and a $10,000 prize purse, makes the Rip Curl Cup the most anticipated event of the Indo surf season.
Rip Curl has set aside a five-week waiting period to hold the “one-day, one-swell” event. This year’s window will run from July 10th through Aug. 14th and the contest will be run entirely on the chosen day. When contest directors see an ideal “Padang swell” in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. Nike Chosen: Go behind the scenes of Nike’s incredible new ’JUST DO IT’ commercial with JULIAN WILSON, KOLOHE ANDINO, MICHEL BOUREZ and LAURA ENEVER as they light up the beaches of Bali, Orlando and Hawaii at night. This amazing video shows the surfers ripping up some night waves, teamed with some impressive lighting and beautiful filiming, this advert is a favourite of us here at Rip101.

The Single Life…
Check out this great video courtesy of Mpora…The Rusty team recently went to Bali armed with single fins, Josh Kerr rewrote the history book with combos of futuristic manoeuvres on a single fin, airs, reverses, fin-chucks and gaffs were the norm. Find the video here…

Parisian gallery La Gaîté Lyrique is scheduled to present its first major summer event under the theme “Public Domaine- Skateboard Culture.” Running from July through until August (check the link for more details). The exhibition includes various artistic aspects that have influenced skateboard culture including music, graphics, cinema, photography, fashion, video games etc. We’ve chosen a few of our favourites but make sure you have a look at the rest of the gallery as there are some fab photos in there…
